Increasing demands for customized products require firms to match market demands with production capabilities and their inventory. Gaining quick access to accurate data can be difficult -- many companies collect some positioning data manually, while others perform electronic updating periodically. Even for firms with completely electronic operations, there are still pitfalls -- many are mired in a chaos of diverse software applications for managing their supply chain.


Large companies'' supply chain operations are in turmoil. Channel dominators and mass market retailers are wreaking havoc on their suppliers by pushing inventories up the supply chain. Meanwhile, retailers and distributors are demanding special handling and shorter order-to-delivery cycles from manufacturers.
