Rapidly advancing technological capabilities have helped companies manage the increasing complexity of global supply chains. Logistic Solution Providers (LSP's) have stepped in with a variety of services and strategies to help companies improve delivery services to their customers. It's a growing, dynamic market, but the wide range of providers from different market segments may point to future merger activity among the numerous players.

Third party logistics (3PL) has established itself as a significant, growing segment of the global logistics industry, with traditional logistics companies as well as new entrants working to carve out niches for themselves as the industry evolves. The 3PL industry includes Logistics Solution Providers (LSPs) and the shippers whose business processes they support. This article describes how increases in business capabilities are driving supply chains toward greater levels of complexity, setting the stage for reassignment of roles in the supply chain. It then addresses trends in shippers'' logistics requirements, the strategies that LSPs are pursuing, and the role of LSPs vis-à-vis the numerous other players in the supply chain.
